Elspeth Hilton — November 5th, 2007There has been a lot of talk on campus about making socially responsible decisions on campus. More specifically, last semester when the ASPC Vice Pres decided it was important that our reserves were invested, there was a push to make sure that they were invested in a socially responsible way. This push was successful and we now have a money manager who will work with the Reserves Investments Oversight Committee to determine which areas we want to invest our money in and which we want to be sure to avoid. This has brought up a lot of discussion about the investment of our endowment as its current state and what we need to do to improve it. Pomona’s own Responsible Endowment Coalition has been responsible for a lot of the wonderful discussion and action taken on campus in this regard. The Christian Science Moniter just published an article about Responsible Endowment Coalitions at Massachusetts colleges and the actions those students have made to push their own administration to invest more responsibly. If this interests you, or you want to know more about it, i encourage you to read the following article, http://www.csmonitor.com/2007/1105/p15s02-wmgn.html?page=2 , as well as get in touch with the Reserves Investment Oversight Committee (chaired by the vp, Burke Wise).
