Elections have arrived! Sign ups to run for a position begin Wednesday, March 26th and will continue until 5 pm, April 1st. Sign up in the ASPC office. A 150 word candidate statement is due by the sign up deadline, which will then be published in TSL. All candidates must attend a mandatory candidate meeting at 10:15 in SCC 208 on April 1st. Campaigning starts when the meeting is over! Voting will be on April 8th.

Curious what’s available? Not sure about the edits to the constitution and how that effected positions? Come ask the Senate! We’ll be at snack on Wednesday, March 26th to answer any questions you may have!

Flyers will be going up around campus this week with descriptions of each position, be sure to check them out.

I hope you’ll consider running for a position, no matter if you are currently a freshman, sophomore or junior. If you were intersted in sophomore class president or north or south campus rep, those elections are in the fall, so be patient!

Any questions? Shoot us an email! (senate@pomona.edu)

For those of you who haven’t heard, the library hours have been extended! After sending out a survey, which 1000 students responded to, I wrote a proposal to the Library Services Director asking for extended hours at Honnold Mudd (year round), 24 hours during finals, relaxed food and drink policy, increase outlets, making print quota available at the library, improving wireless and a few other changes. In just a few weeks, they put together a plan for this semester, and we’ll see how it effects next semester soon! For the week before finals, the library will be opening an hour earlier (7 am) and staying open until 3 am (instead of 10 pm). Beginning finals week the library will be open 24 hours! How exciting! The library has also relaxed their policy allowing small snacks and coffee now!

I’ve been at the library late hours this week and it has been busy! Hopefully this will prove the need for later hours year round.

There has been a lot of talk on campus about making socially responsible decisions on campus. More specifically, last semester when the ASPC Vice Pres decided it was important that our reserves were invested, there was a push to make sure that they were invested in a socially responsible way. This push was successful and we now have a money manager who will work with the Reserves Investments Oversight Committee to determine which areas we want to invest our money in and which we want to be sure to avoid. This has brought up a lot of discussion about the investment of our endowment as its current state and what we need to do to improve it. Pomona’s own Responsible Endowment Coalition has been responsible for a lot of the wonderful discussion and action taken on campus in this regard. The Christian Science Moniter just published an article about Responsible Endowment Coalitions at Massachusetts colleges and the actions those students have made to push their own administration to invest more responsibly. If this interests you, or you want to know more about it, i encourage you to read the following article, http://www.csmonitor.com/2007/1105/p15s02-wmgn.html?page=2 , as well as get in touch with the Reserves Investment Oversight Committee (chaired by the vp, Burke Wise).

Hi! Just a little introduction to who’s who on senate this year and what we look forward to accomplishing for 2007-2008.

President - Elspeth Hilton
Vice President - Burke Wise
Senior Class President - Susan Sparrow
Junior Class President - Petey Kass
Academic Affairs Commissioner - Jonathan Zelig
CCLA Commissioner - Sneha Vakamudi
Communications Commissioner - Kelly Schwartz
Community Affairs Commissioner - Mollie Ruskin
Environmental Affairs Commissioner - Kyle Edgerton
Off Campus Commissioner - Andrés Gallegos
Sports Commissioner - Emi* Okamoto

Our goals include (but are not limited to) increasing wireless access on campus, following through on the SRI process (socially responsible funding), starting a dialogue about grade inflation, improving the freshmen advising process, looking at how science students receive credit, reviewing and getting department status for EA and Neuroscience, promoting green initiatives and the campus climate challange, having more CDO (Career Development Office) open houses, mixing up Jr/Sr Social, increasing funding for the senior financial seminar, creating visibility for campus groups and the diversity committee, working with the volunteer center, first year volunteer opportunities, decreasing costs for birth control, increasing hours at the health center and diversifying the political discourse on campus.

We are still without four senators who will be elected by the student body later in September. The positions still available are Freshman Class President, Sophomore Class President, North Campus Rep and South Campus Rep. If you are interested in these positions (and you should be, thely are great!) then keep an eye out in the digester for election sign ups and feel free to contact me (elspeth.hilton@pomona.edu) if you have any questions!

Keep an eye on this blog, it is sure to be full of updates on campus initiatives, goals and events on campus!
